YL Eastern Europe Staff & Volunteer Application
Expires After: Does not Expire

You are Not Enrolled in this Course.

The completion of this course is a requirement for all staff and volunteers in Eastern Europe to allow access to the rest of the Online Training material.

This course has been slightly adapted for our friends serving in Young Life Eastern Europe.  We apologise that a lot of the language refers to Young Life Australia.  You will need to complete this course to gain access to our other training material.

Below is an introductory video and letter from the Young Life Australia CEO, Glyn Henman.  Please watch the video, and then complete the course material below.

Should you decide to leave and comeback, you will notice a green check-mark next to the lessons and topics that have been completed. This will make it easy for you to start exactly where you left off.  You can also click on “Resume My Last Course” on the homepage to recommence where you left off.

The pages that have videos on them will require you to watch the entire video before it will allow you to continue in the course.  A quiz will become available once you have completed the course; this is simply an acknowledgment that you have completed all the training.

Please do not hesitate to contact your direct supervisor if you have any questions about the material that you cover in this course.

Dear Prospective Volunteer Leader,

Welcome to the ministry of Young Life Australia and the work of young people here in Australia.

It is exciting that you feel the call of God upon your life to work with the young people of your local community.  It is committed people like you that make Young Life Australia what it is today, as we are all a part of God’s bigger plan to reach young people in Australia.  The thing I love about Young Life Australia so much is that it’s a volunteer organisation, and you are continuing that great gift in committing your time to become a Young Life Australia volunteer.

As you can see from the material that we have produced, we are serious about what God has called us to do.  In it, you will find some policy documents that pertain to how we are to conduct ourselves in our mission to young people and how we are to relate together as a community.  It is vital that you read carefully all the information following and fill out the necessary documentation before you begin any ministry with Young Life Australia.  Failure to do so will exclude you from participating in the mission of Young Life Australia until you have completed and handed in the documentation.  This documentation is for your protection as a Young Life Australia representative working in a very volatile environment.

We also ask that you consider joining as a member of Young Life Australia.  There is further information at the end of this package, and the process of how to become a member is outlined, which includes nomination by a current Young Life Australia member.

We would also ask that you not only include the young people that you are working with in your prayer life, but that you would also include all the staff, board, committees, donors and other volunteers into your prayer life as well.  Prayer is what makes the mission happen.  We need to pray to the Lord of the harvest to continue to send out workers into the harvest field (Matthew 9:38), and you are the co-labourers with us in the task that God has laid before us.

We thank you for your commitment to do mission among young Australians with us and we all look forward to spending some time together soon.

God Bless You

Glyn Henman
CEO

Committee Manual
Expires After: Does not Expire

Welcome to Young Life, one of the most dynamic and innovative ministries reaching un-churched young people in Australia today.

Young Life believes that every young person should have the opportunity to hear the message of Jesus Christ from someone they know and trust.  Our approach is designed to ‘connect’ with young people, building long-term relationships based on trust and respect.  Throw in elements of fun, laughter, adrenaline-filled challenges and inspiring speakers – and you have the Young Life mix – one that has been changing millions of lives for over 60 years.

Accomplished By:

  • Praying for young people
  • Going to where young people are
  • Building relationships with them
  • Winning the right to be heard
  • Providing experiences that are fun, adventurous and life-changing
  • Sharing our lives
  • Sharing Jesus
  • Loving them regardless of their response
  • Discipleship
  • Helping young people develop their skills, assets and attitudes to reach their God-given potential
  • Encouraging young people to be connected and engaged in a local church
  • Working with a team of like-minded individuals – volunteer leaders, committee members, donors and staff

Thank you for your service to Young Life through your local committee.  Throughout the Bible, we see God assembling teams of servants to work out His salvation purposes. He sent 70 elders to Moses to ‘help carry the burden of the people’ so Moses ‘would not have to carry it alone’ (Numbers 11:17). The early church, as it struggled to serve growing numbers of disciples, commissioned men ‘full of the Spirit and wisdom’ (Acts 6:3) so that the Word of God could be shared with a waiting world.

For Young Life, the waiting world is every young person, everywhere. And we can’t enter their world without adult committee members like you. Thank you!

Taking Donors Seriously (TDS)
Expires After: Does not Expire

Dear Partner in Ministry,

Tony Campolo once said “Young Life is expert at going to where young people are.”

I like to think that’s true. We take our commitment to young people very seriously. We meet them on their turf and build significant relationships with them. We go out of our way to care for them. We do what it takes to ‘win the right to be heard’ so that we may share the love of Jesus Christ with them.

But can we say the same thing of our donors? What about our volunteers? How much effort do we put into caring for these people?

In Australia, I think Young Life has a mixed record on this. We’ve certainly had our failings where donors and volunteers have felt more ‘used’ than valued as partners. But with each failing, I think we’ve also learned to do things a bit differently.

The bottom line is we must be as committed to caring for donors and volunteers as much as we are to caring for young people.

That’s what Taking Donors Seriously (TDS) is all about. It’s a set of guiding principles that helps shape our thinking about what it means to find and truly partner with donors. It may also help clarify committee roles as each member takes a deeper look at their skills and what they can do to make a difference.

This handbook has been adapted from our USA counterparts. We have a few different ‘philosophies’ and have adapted these for an Australian context. Overall, they’re on to something. They too have a mixed record with their donors. And like us, they have learned and want to do things differently.

Thank you for your valued partnership in reaching young people all around Australia. I hope you will find this handbook helpful in our journey together.

Kind Regards,

Glyn Henman
Chief Executive Officer
Young Life Australia

Committee Roles
Expires After: Does not Expire

Getting the right people on your committee can really help in growing and maintaining an area.

Have a look through the various roles that we suggest should be thought through to make the committee the best it can be!

Some of the material in this course has been taken from Young Life USA – the principles that are spoken about are the same here in Australia.

Committee Kit
Expires After: Does not Expire

Dear Friends,

Young Life volunteers are our greatest assets.  I don’t just mean our volunteer leaders.  We are an organisation that relies on volunteers at every level – in the schools, in our offices, at national and regional camps . . . and in our local communities.

Local volunteer committees made their early formal beginnings in 2000.  Since that time, we have attempted to sink more time and resources into supporting these committees through handbooks, training summits, visits from National Office staff and appointing a Committee Liaison person.

As we continue to grow, it is clear that we need to continue to invest in our local committees.  This Committee Resource kit is a resource that aims to assist with this.  As we’ve worked to provide increased training for our committees, it became clear that we needed to come up with a resource that could be utilised by Regional Directors and Area Managers, in partnership with their local committees.

When this kit was initially released in 2009, we polled former and existing committee from all Areas to help us determine key topic areas that were relevant to all committees from start up to veteran stages.  The kit is a living document that is intended to be revised and added to over time.  We welcome input and suggestions from you, our valued volunteers, if you have ideas to add to the committee kit.

We hope you will find this is a valuable resource as you serve in your local Young Life ministry.

Kind Regards,

Glyn Henman
Chief Executive Officer
Young Life Australia

Here you will find the assignments that will need to be completed throughout the year.  Your supervisor will instruct you as to when to complete which topic.

You will also notice on the side-bar that you can download the full Intern Booklet, as well as assignment sheets & journal options if required.

Hopefully you’ll find this year a challenge and you will finish it feeling like you have not only gained some more skills for working with young people, but also that you feel closer to Jesus and clearer in the calling He has on your life.

One component of what we do is read four books together throughout the year.

The books are:

  1. Master Plan of Evangelism – Robert Coleman
  2. The Book of Romans
  3. Back to the Basics of Young Life – John Miller
  4. Celebration of Disciplines – Richard Foster

Reading Celebration of Disciplines will occur throughout the year, as this is a book that is really designed to be read thoughtfully & put into practise.

You can grab the Journal Reading Highlights template from the sidebar and the topics below give you a further outline as needed.

The other component that is found here is the Reflective Assignments.

You are required to complete four of these throughout the year, each due at the end of each school term.

Dear Team,

It has been over 70 years since Jim Rayburn took his first group of young people out camping. Jim had a passionate belief that the Gospel of Jesus Christ was the pearl of great price, a jewel so valuable that it was worthy of all our efforts to put it into the most dazzling display case a person could ever construct! From that first time, until now, Young Life camps were designed to be a fitting canvas for the greatest message ever proclaimed.

For over 40 years, Young Life Australia has continued to rise with that vision for Australian young people. We are constantly honing, refining and developing this great and effective Young Life tool. No matter how much fun the program is, no matter how friendly the work crew are or no matter how well we present the message of Christ from up front, the single most influential person in the camp week is you as a cabin leader. The volunteer cabin leader is the glass young people most often look through to get a glimpse of Jesus Christ.

This training is designed to help you polish the glass so that your young friends will have not only the best week of their lives, but the most important week of their lives. We trust the information, encouragement and training will help equip you as you work to give your young friends a clear picture of Jesus Christ through the Young Life camp experience.

I deeply appreciate what you do. I understand that the camp week is just one small part of the whole picture. Your young friends see you on the other 51 weeks of the year, but this will be the most intense week of your year with them. May God bless you as you prepare to give your friends an up-close, week long look at Jesus at camp! My prayers are with you.

In Christ,

Glyn Henman
CEO
Young Life Australia

Dear team,

Welcome to the challenge of preparing for Work Crew!

It has been over 70 years since Jim Rayburn took his first group of young people out camping and it is over 40 years since the first Young Life camp took place in Australia. You are now continuing a great tradition of service at Young Life camps around the world.

For thousands of young people over the years, serving on the work crew has been a wonderful time of spiritual growth, personal maturity and a high water mark in their life with Jesus Christ. Many important lessons are learned, friendships established and many truths about God become real and meaningful.

Work crew is a lot of hard work, so get prepared. The preparation process before camp takes energy as does your assignment at camp. Many lessons in life come through hardship and disappointment, but this is often when we can see God doing his thing in our lives. There will be times when you wonder why on earth you signed on and handed in your money to serve God this way. But it is often at these times that God does his best work. There is nothing like being pushed to the limits of physical and emotional exhaustion to see God make lasting change in our lives.

Then there is the sense of personal joy and fulfilment as we watch the young people we have served make the beginning steps of their own faith journey as a result of your service. Becoming a part of a faith community, serving with a purpose may be something you never experience again and the friendships made often last a life time.

It is our prayer for you that the Young Life work crew experience will be a rich and rewarding one. We ask that you not only trust God to move in the lives of the campers, cabin leaders and other adults you will serve during your week, but also trust Him to move you along in your walk with Jesus as you serve. We pray that you will not return home the same. We pray that your life will be transformed in ways that you did not expect. Give all that you can to this vital task of serving God through the Young Life work crew.

In Christ,

Glyn Henman
CEO
